What Is Executive Coaching?

In business leadership the question of ‘What is executive coaching?’ comes up periodically as companies seek to develop their management talent. An executive coach is a professional in the field of management and leadership that works with executives and potential executives to help develop their self-awareness, ability to set goals, achieve their development objectives, unlock their potential and act as counselor and mentor.

These types of coaches are not hired to give advice or solve specific problems but rather to help executives learn techniques for identifying and solving problems on their own. They act as a confidential adviser for their clients and, by asking relevant questions, challenging assumptions, clarifying issues and teaching problem solving, help executives to become better leaders. They often conduct behavioral assessments and confidential interviews to help their clients get feedback on their leadership style and to help self-awareness in their roles.
