Virtual Reality In Electrical Engineering Education

Students and teachers often lack access to the latest equipment and devices that are available in the market. This means that students sometimes find it difficult to understand abstract issues in mechanical and electrical engineering due to the complexity of devices which might be made easier if they were tangible.

Recent work with virtual electrical engineering teams has shown the virtual reality technology is a successful teaching aid in electrical engineering education. Software has been developed that provides a simple interface for interacting with 3D representations of electrical components and prototypes. It enables the use to manipulate a 3D object for analysis and study. Initial results have been promising and show that the use of virtual reality can contribute to the quality and effectiveness of higher education in the electrical engineering discipline. This results in students achieving better competencies and skills and being more competitive in the jobs market.
