Owning your own travel agency business can be a rewarding way of running your own business and working for yourself. And surprisingly, there is still a need for travel agents despite the fact that most of us book our flights, hotel rooms and cruises online. One way to succeed if you operate your own travel agency is to specialize; for example in cruises, adventure travel, luxury trips or honeymoon travel. There are no specific educational requirements to run your own travel agency, although obviously an interest and background in travel is useful. You’ll need to enjoy working with people, solving problems and finding the best bargains for your clients. Most travel agents have a network of contacts and you’ll need to be familiar with one of the agency computer systems. Of course, working for yourself also means being well organized, and keeping track of income and expenses.
