Mental Health First Aid: Helping Someone In Crisis

Stressful situations can be challenging to manage for even the most emotionally healthy person. When mental illness is thrown into the mix, it can feel impossible. If you find yourself in a position where someone close to you needs mental health first aid, you need to read this article.

1) What causes a mental health crisis?

A mental health crisis occurs when someone’s mental state changes drastically and cannot tolerate everyday life or usual surroundings. This could mean that the individual has thoughts of suicide, homicide, or self-harm, is experiencing severe depression and anxiety, or feels paranoid about being watched by others, or follows delusions that their family is trying to hurt them.

2) What is mental health first aid?

Several first-aid methods can be followed when helping someone in need. These include:
– Listen and let the person talk without interrupting; they may initially want to be heard.
– Avoid trying to convince them of anything, even if you don’t necessarily agree with what’s happening.

3) Where can I get help in case of a mental health crisis?

– If you feel that someone is in mental distress and needs professional help, it’s best to call 911.
– The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: if you or someone else is feeling suicidal (in addition to the above steps), this number can be called 24 hours a day at 800–273–TALK
Don’t wait to have a mental health crisis; seek help in time.
