While the pandemic had some effect on all all forms of commerce, it was especially damaging to specialty retailers. These tend to be smaller enterprises that concentrate on a smaller, more unique set of products. As a result, they were much less able to withstand an extended drop in sales or an extended cutoff from their normal sources of supply.
Business closure among these specialty shops was much more common than the rate of failure experienced in other segments of the retail industry. For those who built online retail operations, however, it was both the best of times and the worst of times. Everyone wanted to buy but supply chain glitches affected these retailers as much as anyone else.
Now, however, the supply chains are loosening up for companies that vend, for example, Goth Shoes online. Their local competitors are dust and their market is returning to vibrancy.
