It can be really hard to find quality lumber in some states. It can be hard to find wood from particular species at all. Modern lumber is often some sort of pine or other fast growing tree that is not as dense or necessarily as beautiful as old hardwood that was cut domestically. Buying reclaimed barn beams is an excellent way to recycle wood. It might not be used in building new homes, but it could be a great source of wood for furniture or other projects that expect beauty.
Old wood is not necessarily full of holes. Many types of species are protected naturally by resin or the sheer density of the wood itself. If these old pieces do contain a few holes, then they are easily restored with resin or simply used as is for furniture that does not have to bear any critical weight. Find your samples online and then decide which antique wood type is right for you.
