With the recent explosion in lumber prices, many projects that were once slated for construction out of wood have now been altered to utilize other types of materials. There are two related factors that drive this change.
The first factor is one of availability. If no lumber is available, then one has to look at either delaying your plans or exploring alternative material types. The second is that lumber may indeed be available but at an elevated price. In this case, you may want to use a more durable material that can be obtained for the same price as now-expensive lumber.
Brick and paver suppliers seem to have ample inventory still, as do concrete plants. If you can build out of a more lasting material for the same price as wood, why not go for the better, and frankly more attractive, alternative?
